Passport to Style: Key West

Perfect Ten, Tylar's Treasure Key West Living Room Full

Happy Sunday!  According to the calendar, summer doesn’t end until September 23rd, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy!  Grab your overnight bag, sunscreen and passport, we’re headed to Key West, Florida (USA).  Key West is the southernmost city in the Continental United States, located 129 miles southwest of Miami, Florida, and 106 miles north-northeast of Havana, Cuba.  Cuba, at its closest point, is 94 miles south.  Key West is a small seaport city, total area 7.4 square miles and on the dividing line between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.  It was also a hideaway for authors Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.  Key West is divided into four distinct areas: Old Town, Casa Marina, Mid-Town and New Town.  With a tropical climate, similar to the Caribbean islands, the bright-colored historic homes (1886-1912) dotting Old Town called conch are wood-framed one or two-story structures built on foundation piers above the ground, with metal roofs, horizontal wood siding, and covered porches, attributed to immigrants from the Bahamas.

Perfect Ten, Tylar's Treasure Key West Living Room Mid Bright

Some Key West design elements are bright colors, clean lines and minimal clutter with the focus on bringing the outdoors in as much as possible through the inclusion of large windows with minimal coverage and vibrant color selections that mimic the sand, sun and sea.  It’s typical to see white furnishings with pops of bright-colored pillows or throws, louver shutters, natural fabrics, coastal art and accessories such as seashells, sailboats or sailfish in this laid-back tropical seaside oasis.

Tylar’s Treasures newest release Key West Collection at Perfect Ten is a tropical inspired living room collection, available for 50% off from September 1-15 (it’s out early).  The collection includes aqua blue, lime green and crisp white animated rowboat chair and love seat, table lamps with sailboat decal, painted white coffee table and end table, paisley vase with lime twigs, turquoise bowl with floral, sailboat wall art and ceiling fan.  To complete the styling, I incorporated nautical oars, jars filled with sand and shells, seashell art, potted palms, turquoise candle tray, shell rug, bench with aqua toss pillows, captain lanterns and Sway’s mason jar beach vignette with palm tree and animated bird & fish (@Fantasy Gacha Carnival 8/12-9/12).   Tylar’s motto for laid back lifestyle printed on the pillows is “Sandy Toes & Salty Kisses,” so when transforming your home with the Florida Keys look use a vibrant color palette and remember “All you need is LOVE and the BEACH!”

Passport to Style: Far East

Park Place, Far East Style

One of my favorite aspects of being a virtual reality interior designer is that it allows you to travel to all corners of the globe without leaving your home.  Just like in VR fashion styling, I research the origins, location, and decor elements and try to give you a sense of the place.  Last year, I explored the various styles of California design, sharing stories of my family travels.  Lately, I have the travel bug and find myself googling different locales.  Today we have packed our bags and are heading to the Far East!

Park Place, Eastern Shelf Unit

I love the fusion of serene, peaceful, balanced simplicity of Asian decor paired with modern furnishings.  Some key design principles of Oriental style are natural elements, clean lines, Chinoiserie furniture, and circle motif.  Today, I designed a small tea-house space using some of Park Place Home Decor current sale items available at the main store (ending Saturday) and at The Wash Biannual Cart Sale (8/26-9/16).  Park Place Eastern Shelf Unit with Accessories typifies a number of Asian design components from the upper circle unit to the symmetrical balance of the shelving.  I added the Blue Mosaic Bottle Decor, available for $10L at The Wash Cart Sale, to highlight the traditional temple in the middle of the circle unit.  Flanking the Eastern Shelf is the Marble Resting Egret, representing the reflection of nature often found in Far East style.

Park Place, Low Tea Table

Another sale item offered until Saturday is the Low Tea Table with Cushions.  The black coffee table with burgundy cushion seating matches the Eastern Shelf Unit and embodies the clean lines of Asian form.  The tea table comes with a coffee set and to complete the scene, I added the Box of Fine Chocolates (available @ The Wash Sale).

Park Place, Cherry Table Clock

Finally, placed on a storage unit in the corner is the Copper Red Table Clock; the hands on the clock mimic the circular pattern in the shelving unit.  Be sure to check out all the sale offerings at The Wash and stop by Park Place main store for hunt gifts and discounted specials.  Hope you enjoyed the trip and are inspired to incorporate some Far East elements into your home!

Serenity Style Summer Hideaway

Serenity Style- Summer Camp Bedroom

Happy Saturday!  I know, I promised I would feature each part of the one-room Summer hideaway, designed exclusively with Serenity Style, in a series this week, I’m sorry real life had other plans.  So I’m going to combine a few areas and wrap up the house tour in this post.  I have too many other projects and blog posts I need to finish.  That being said, let’s continue our journey moving from the kitchen into the bedroom.  Vintage worn-in country charm is predominate in the space with make-shift fence headboard, purple and soft green quilted duvet, eclectic wall art, and an assortment of rustic storage options.  The bedroom area is warm and inviting capturing the joy of a relaxing summer refuge.

Serenity Style- Summer Camp Bathroom

Serenity Style- Summer Camp Bathroom Close-up

It’s time to unwind and de-stress in the giant soaker tub, star-gazing while soaking away your troubles in the bathroom.  Simply appointed with a the basic essentials of a wardrobe, some decorative accessories, and an inviting chair.

Serenity Style- Summer Camp Living Room

Serenity Style- Summer Camp Overview

The washroom also serves as a backdrop for the living room with low table and floor seating.  With a pallet functioning as a coffee table, multiple pillow options for chairs, hanging paper lanterns above and games scattered around, an informal free-spirited mood encapsulates the one room summer studio.

Serenity Style- Summer Camp Laundry

Finally, as we return to the bucolic setting, the side porch is being used for vintage country laundry and beyond the sunflower fields, in the distance are a collection of rusty old machines.  Each zone of the tiny house has delights found at Serenity Style.

The dogs in this pic lives a good life.

My RL dogs are no stranger to living a great life. In fact, they were sleeping on our bed when I was drafting this post.

They never used to, not openly anyway. There were times when I wake up to find my dogs quietly crept up next to me in bed, and I let that slide because they were too cute and cuddly. And there were times when I felt rotten and ordered my dogs to cuddle up in bed with me. But they were never allowed on the bed on their own.

I used to run this household with an iron fist. The dogs know where they stand. Or sit. Or lie. You know, whatever it is that dogs do.

That has been my pooches’ way of life for 4 years now.

Eversince The Man came home for good (he used to work away) and the baton Alpha Dog passed on to him, the dogs have found another world.

Another world where the ruler is pretty damn awesome.

I know I’m this mean and strict owner. LOL I can’t change myself.

And I fully acknowledge that the Man is the super fun one. I only need to look at how they greet him vs how they greet me when we come home from work.

How my dogs greet me: Sit until the car is nicely parked in the driveway, and come over to say hello, with polite wags of tails. Hello Mother, how are you, is your day well, can we please get fed when it is a convenient time for you, yes we have been behaving all day, if you find something wrong, I didn’t do it he/she did.

How my dogs greet my Man: They wait all day. Isthatdad’scar? No? No. What about that one? Is it that one? YAS, IT’S THAT ONE! OMG DADDADDADDAD HELICOPTERTAILWAGSTAILWAGSTAILWAGS I CAN’T DECIDE WHICH TOYS TO PRESENT TO YOU, RUN IN CIRCLES, I AM SO HAPPY AND OVERWHELMED THAT YOU ARE HOME!

Can you tell which of us is the dogs’ favourite?

Yeah, me neither.

Woof woof, my loves. <3
